Leadership Development through Experiences

Mis à jour : 19 mars 2018

According to Ryan P. Meers from the University of Nebraska, there are particular experiences important in developing leaders. The most fruitful included experience of adversity or loss, experience of “stretch assignments,” inspirational experiences, and last but not least – conflict experience.

These leadership opportunities were identified after interviewing leaders from a host of organizations. Complementing the latter, D. Scott DeRue and Ned Wellman from the University of Michigan in Developing Leaders via Experience assert that “the more challenging an experience is for an individual, the more developmental value that experience holds for the individual.”

As important as experience is in social environments, where a host of opportunities exist, I must admit that Al Akhawayn University (AUI) seems to be an extraordinary setting for leadership development when compared to my experience in Poland.

At my University, the University of Wroclaw, and specifically in the Department of Sociology where I was studying, there was one club, no Student Activity Office which facilitated avenues for developing leadership opportunities, and there was no discussion at the University regarding a Leadership Development Institute.

Thus, upon arrival at AUI, I was highly impressed by the variety of activities the University offers its students. As well, I was pleased to start working in a multinational environment with cultural influences from all over the world. I think that the academic and social support provided by AUI is a privilege which should be used for each student’s development.

As a newbie, as a recent

graduate, and as the LDI Intern, I encourage all AUI students to take the experiences life offers (the good and the bad, the difficult and the easy, the exciting and the boring); and most importantly, use all the resources AUI is offering to chart a plan for leadership growth. You owe it to yourself, to humanity, and to those you will eventually lead. Inshallah!
